Kakán was the language of the Diaguita
people, who came from the north of Argentina and populated
the fertile Traversal Valleys.
Rodolfo Schüller's studies indicate that, in the
areas where this language was spoken, it is totally
extinguished.
Currently, some Kakan words are conserved in surnames
and local toponyms (names of places), such as:
Places: Antofagasta, Chalingasta, Elqui, Sotaquí,
Atacama, Calama, Toconao, Ticnamar, Combarbalá,
etc.
Surnames: Alballay, Campillay, Sapiaín,
Talinay, Chavilca, Tamango, etc.
Names of plants: Chañar, gualtata, chilca,
yalipalqui, palqui, etc.
