Wilancha, or sacrifices, are performed on a stone table
(altar), and they include offerings of blood, perfume,
coca leaves, drops of alcohol and prayers. The Wilancha
consists of a ritual meal of sacrificed meat, encompassed
by traditional dances.
Sometimes, a Yatiri, a wise man, consults with the hill,
in loud voice, as if he was the condor who speaks.
In these rituals the community expects the hill spirit's
blessings. They hope for water and protection. Pachamama
is honored in each activity or celebration, and being
offered with coca leaves, drops of alcohol or whatever
the occasion calls for.
Called Virginia -in the Aymara's secret language - Pachamama
has her special day of honor at the livestock fertility
festival. This is celebrated in January or February,
during the fertile rain season, when there is rich grass
and llamas are born. The cult takes place in the livestock
corral, where the Arco of life is raised. Pachamama
is the earth mother, celebrated for being the universal
mother of fertility, who feeds life in the planet.
