The "Andine" medicine man has the name of Yatiri, in charge of the complete ritual which function is to send the sick man to the Cosmos. His principal job is the diagnostic and future. His occupation is the observation of the patients state (psycho - somatic); the reason of the sickness. All of it transcends on the positive level to start working with the ethic-religion.
The ethnology is the Yatiris especially. In general he limits to ask: eater the coke leaves or the dreams, or the cuys interiors and then define the evil and give the correct medicine. You can also ask the Yatiri about the loss of Cattle, the cause of a fire or the reason of lightning.
The power of the Yatiri is beyond natural, however his experience is obtained by the learning and the practice supervised by a master. Besides he must be good, merciful, have good manners, be married by church, not get drunk, have faith in the gods, follow the praise, do well the sacrifice and keep good moral.
The Mapuche Machi
The Machi looks for the cause of sickness prescribes especial spiritual treatment. The search always begins with the help of spiritual forces. The end of the treatment is the 'Machitun', sacred community ritual, magic, that begins the night before with sacred dreams. The day after they begin with the healing in a, so called, party, with music, dancing and ritual movements, getting at the end a dramatically group atmosphere. They play the kultrun (Machis drum) and other musical instruments, but not for their musical value, but for the "sacromagic" transcendence. Eater he or the Machi use natural drugs, herbs and secret medicine, to enter the divine dimension threw a state of trance.
The Machi, in order to be one has to be called by "Nguenechen", the Mapuche God.
